As first year students begin to look forward to the Spring Semester and fraternity/sorority recruitment, please be aware that several groups exist at Penn who portray themselves as fraternities or sororities who are not official or recognized fraternities or sororities.  These groups exist without the benefit of University oversight.  They may recruit with alcohol which is against University policy as well as against the policy of all national fraternities, and allegedly openly haze their new members.  Some of these organizations are remnants of former fraternities that were suspended for disciplinary purposes.  Should anyone have questions as to which groups are legitimate, please contact the Office of Fraternity Sorority Affairs at ofsa@pobox.upenn.edu, or call 215.898.5263 and ask for Scott, Stacy or Larry.   Be aware that the following student organizations are not recognized or legitimate fraternities or sororities at the University of Pennsylvania:

The Tabard Society

The Owl Society

THEOS

OZ or any variation

We encourage you as responsible students to look closely at the 50 legitimate, strong fraternities and sororities on our campus that enjoy the programming, support, networking, and guidance of national headquarters and educational foundations, well trained alumni/ae advisory boards and house corporations, and the expertise of the Office of Fraternity Sorority Affairs.
